Battle-ax is the stage name for Vienna-based viola fiddler Beatrix Curran.

Transformed by dramatic lighting into a concert setting, the main hall of Kunsthalle Wien sets the stage for her solo-performance. The atmospheric lighting conditions will create an immersive space between sound and sight, teasing out the interplay between the specific imagery under the spotlight and her performance.

Battle-ax both undermines and is reinforced by her classical training. Her performances are considered to be disruptive and at the same time refined, playing in clubs next to heavily produced electronic sounds, her practice and improvisational style has been described as lying between romanticism, atonalism and an energized repetition.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Beatrix Curran moved to Vienna, having been first attracted to the city’s musical history. Battle-ax plays alongside musicians such as Hieroglyphic Being, TCF, HVAD and DJ Stingray. She often collaborates and performs with fellow Vienna-based producer Forever Traxx and Berlin collective Dawn Mok.

Recent performances by Battle-ax include the closing event for Viennese nonprofit contemporary art venue wellwellwell (2018), Mass No.1 at Archivio Conz in Berlin, presented by Supportico Lopez (2017) and the 2017 Wiener Festwochen. Battle-ax has released on Antwerp label Ultra Eczema.
