How do artists explore our present? How do they work and think? In the new Kunsthalle Wien Atelier, you have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with artists. Our workshop series for adults offers the opportunity to be inspired by artists, learn a variety of techniques and create your own works of art.

Quilts (quilted blankets) tell stories, show messages and provide a surface for communication. In this workshop, fabric remnants or old clothes are turned into appliqués that are sewn onto a larger fabric by hand. Simple or complex shapes, patterns or words – anything can communicate. In addition, we will work with the technique of quilting (joining 3 layers of fabric) to create further structures and patterns in the fabric. The simple running stitch forms the basis for this. Different effects can be created by varying the stitch length, thread thickness or distance between the rows.

Fabrics and materials are available on site. Please feel free to bring your own fabric remnants or old clothes!

Deborah Hazler works as a freelance artist in the fields of dance and performance, as well as textile art. Her current artistic focus is on textile text work in the form of tapestries and quilts with a focus on bringing the slowness of the techniques to the fore. Since 2010 she has co-directed the independent performance platform Raw Matters – an unpolished performance evening in Vienna.
