Which Side Are You On? gives an overview of over twenty years of Rajkamal Kahlon’s artistic practice, which explores the entanglements of power and visual regimes.
The artist critically examines archives, historical documents, and literature about colonialism, which she overlays with drawings and paintings of people, who are otherwise the focus of these sources’ colonial gaze. She exposes the colonial imagery to a radical process of transformation, which recovers the individuality and dignity of her portrayed subjects. In this way, drawing and painting become sites of political and aesthetic resistance. The violence inherent in colonial and ethnographic images is countered by the artists with beauty, humor, sensuality, and allure.
