instructions for actions

Event
21/11 2002 — 21/11 2005
Karlsplatz

Artists challenge passers-by to participate in actions requiring a maximum of five minutes of their time.
A permanent installation of the Kunsthalle Wien project space in the public space, for urban dwellers and art lovers, flâneurs, those hurrying by, and dawdlers.
Initiated in autumn 2002, with the works of 26 Austrian and international artists, this project will be continued in autumn 2003 with instructions from 23 additional artists who have collaborated with the Kunsthalle Wien over the course of its ten-year existence. They all provide the passers-by in the Karlsplatz area with suggestions for actions or thought processes that can be completed while walking by. These ?instructions,? are posted on the lamp posts in Girardipark and Resselpark and offer food for thought that breaks up the usual course of the day, providing motivation for a spontaneous confrontation with art.
Thus the Kunsthalle Wien, as a showcase between art and the public, continues the use of the ?art square, Karl?s square.? Since opening there as a provisional exhibition site, the Kunsthalle has contributed significantly to the revitalization of the Karlsplatz.
