Sanja Iveković is concerned with showing how the codes produced and standardized by visual media – in advertising and political propaganda, in newspaper reports, on television or in film – are reflected in our collective social behavior and find their ideological expression. With her critical and at the same time inventive procedures, she subverts socially inscribed power structures and makes visible how these specifically determine the representation of “femininity” and the “image of woman,” and how the politics of images turns on the politics of bodies. Given the infinite and manipulative image production of digital media, the significance of her art becomes all the more urgent today.
