Verena Giesinger has been leading and conducting the pop choir she founded, the Schmusechor, since 2014 (concerts and performances at RadioKulturhaus Vienna, Gartenbaukino Vienna, Brut Vienna, Poolbar Feldkirch, Lumen Museum South Tyrol etc.). Since 2019, she has also been the artistic director as well as conductor of the Vienna-based femchor.
She herself sings in various ensembles and formations as well as in a women’s trio. Most recently, she appeared as conductor and performer in Sara Ostertag’s play Die Milchfrau at Kosmostheater. Giesinger was also seen and heard as a singer in a multimedia choral performance by Italian composer Stefano d’Alessio, Here somewhere else. In 2019 and 2020, she was part of the performance and dance collective for Habitat / Halle E as well as Habitat / the pandemic version, both choreographed by Doris Uhlich. Giesinger is also a pianist and studied music therapy in Vienna and cultural and media management in Hamburg.
The femchor is a self-organized feminist choir consisting of FLINTA*s standing up against sexism and discrimination of any kind: “Feminists and all people marginalized by patriarchy have always been strong when they have raised their voices together. Through singing as an instrument, the femchor wants to do just that and make society a little more feminist. Loudly, the choir has now been around since spring 2020, whether in the city wilderness, on the streets or in the university: there can never be enough feminist associations and singing – here and now, both are combined into a multi-voiced, feminist revolt.”
