Performative intervention in the exhibition Radical Software: Women, Art & Computing 1960–1991

Shoe-Field (1982–1989) presents the results of Sonya Rapoport’s (1923, Brookline – 2015, Berkeley) years of interactive exploration with shoes. Rapoport herself described her work as ‘an aesthetic response triggered by scientific data.’ When Shoe-Field was first exhibited in 1982, it was accompanied by a participatory performance titled A Shoe-In, where participants were invited to reflect on their personal relationship with shoes through a survey.

With the activation of Rapoport’s work, visitors of Kunsthalle Wien have the opportunity to interact with the original software, compare their results with the early iterations of the project and learn more about their own ‘shoe psyche.’

Shoe-Field humorously integrates emotions into quantitative analysis and technology. The activation – which was previously presented at Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean – offers visitors the chance to become part of a larger project that transcends borders and institutions, while also expanding the common use of technology.

Free of charge with a valid exhibition ticket.
