The 2024 edition of the Kunsthalle Wien Preis exhibition is accompanied by a new book published in German and English by Kunsthalle Wien.
The Kunsthalle Wien Preis seeks to support emerging artists living and working in Vienna via an annual collaboration between Kunsthalle Wien, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
For this edition, Rawan Almukhtar and Ida Kammerloch were selected by a jury of curators and artists including representatives from all three institutions. Each received a monetary award in addition to a joint solo exhibition and publication organised by Kunsthalle Wien.
Rawan Almukhtar studied Fine Art (Art and Intervention | Concept) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The paintings and drawings take inspiration from Almukhtar’s experiences as a refugee and activist. Through the practice, Almukhtar seeks to create a collective moment of witnessing the stories of those who have been overlooked in the West, while also questioning the ways in which such people should be considered.
Ida Kammerloch studied TransArts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her recent video essays draw upon her grandfather’s archive of homemade videos. Recorded in post-Soviet Russia in the 1990s, they document a time of significant political and social change. Kammerloch likewise contrasts the uncanny difference between state-constructed Russian identity and the lived realities of its citizens today, using her personal family narrative to anchor such storytelling.
The book contains a foreword by Michelle Cotton, Artistic Director of Kunsthalle Wien, Johan F. Hartle, Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and Petra Schaper Rinkel, former Rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Interviews between the artists and the exhibition curator Hannah Marynissen, as well as specially-commissioned essays by Alicja Melzacka and Rijin Sahakian, further illustrate the practices of the artists.
The Kunsthalle Wien Preis 2024 is realized with the kind and generous support of Kunsttrans and smc Steirer Mika & Comp.
