Radical Software T-Shirt

Shop

For the exhibition Radical Software: Women, Art & Computing 1960–1991, Kunsthalle Wien produced a T-shirt with the cover of the first issue of the magazine Radical Software.

The exhibition is titled after the magazine that Beryl Korot started with fellow artists Phyllis (Gershuny) Segura and Ira Schneider in 1970. They adopted the term software (as opposed to hardware) as a metaphor and powerful tool for social change. The magazine’s wide-ranging editorial model and mission to serve as ‘an evolving handbook of technology’, decentralising access to information, predated the World Wide Web by two decades. The magazine was published until 1974 with a total of eleven issues.

Printed on the front of the T-shirt is a digital image by Beryl Korot and Davidson Gigliotti, which was on the cover of the first issue (spring 1970). All 50 artists of the exhibition are listed on the back of the T-shirt. With this T-shirt, we are honouring the pioneers who have had a lasting impact on digital art.
