The WIENWOCHE 2024 presents the exhibition We speak for ourselves! Prisoners speak out at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm.
The thirteenth edition of the WIENWOCHE art and culture festival will take place in Vienna from 13 to 22 September 2024. Under the title ‘The Non-Citizen Movement’, WIENWOCHE 2024 acts as an agency for art and activism. The festival focuses on opportunities for action for people living in Vienna without civil and voting rights as well as solidarity comradeship. In the midst of the National Council election campaign, WIENWOCHE invites you to participate in creating a non-citizen movement. Despite all the restrictions on political or artistic expression, all the restrictions on freedom of travel and movement, WIENWOCHE opens up a field of experimentation. At its centre are concepts such as unification and solidarity, infiltration and disobedience. But also: poetics and alternative infrastructures.
We speak for ourselves! Prisoners speak out asks about human dignity in prison. Here, the prisoners have the floor. They speak for themselves and share their experiences. It is about representing one’s own interests, expressing and reflecting on oneself through art, and finding training and work opportunities. What needs to change and who is fighting for it? The protagonist in the project is the Union for Prisoners’ Rights, the first self-organised representation of prisoners in Austria. As part of WIENWOCHE 2024, their exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz presents reports on the topic of human dignity in prison, images and texts from prisons, interviews with (former) prisoners, discussions and a cooking performance.
