Free offer for schools

Schools and universities have access to free guided tours of all our exhibitions. For pupils and apprentices, we offer discursive tours, conversations on art, behind-the-scenes tours and workshops that use the current exhibition as a starting point for dialogue, learning and engagement. All tours and workshops for school classes are also available in Einfache Sprache (simple German language) upon request.

All educational formats are devised to support the study of art, complimenting classroom teaching. They can be tailored to different levels of knowledge and age groups and are designed for all school types.

Discursive Tour (60 minutes)

Discuss artistic strategies for addressing socially relevant topics and encourage critical thinking. Our educators support students by providing information about the artists and exhibitions, posing questions and moderating the discussions.

Conversations on Art (90 minutes)

Themes from one of our current exhibitions are discussed and explored through independent group work by students, followed by a discussion. The aim is to stimulate creative thinking and encourage students to draw connections between contemporary art and their own experience.

Behind-the-Scenes Tour (90 minutes)

How long does it take to organize an exhibition? What skills are needed at Kunsthalle Wien? And how much does it cost to make an exhibition? During this tour, we answer all the questions that usually go unasked. We visit Kunsthalle Wien’s workshops and take a short guided tour through one of the exhibitions while explaining how exhibitions are made and the work that goes into preparing them.

Workshop (120 minutes)

Drawing, weaving, shaping, or animating – we give students the opportunity to experiment with different artistic practices. The workshops are based on the current exhibitions, providing a rich space to gain hands-on experience of various artistic techniques. A € 2 material fee per person applies for these workshops.

Information Sessions for Teachers

We work closely with school teachers and trainee teachers to bring contemporary art into the curriculum via the exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien. We provide regular information sessions for teachers to gain insights on our current and upcoming programmes. Through these we can introduce you to our work and educational programmes and guide you through the exhibitions. Sign up for the teacher’s newsletter.

Possible Workshops

Balancing, Noting, and Collecting

A workshop for pupils and young people accompanying the exhibition Zilijifa by Ibrahim Mahama

Duration: 120 minutes
Fee: € 2 / student

A giant train in the middle of the exhibition? In Zilijifa, artist Ibrahim Mahama transforms everyday materials into monumental works of art. But what do these objects tell us? And how do they transform the space around them?

The Ghanaian artist works with materials that have already lived a life – objects that carry traces of labor, trade, and colonial histories. Together, we explore the political dimensions of material: What stories are embedded in objects? How does their meaning shift when placed in an exhibition context? And what happens when we ourselves begin working with such objects?

In the studio, we use found materials, rearrange, combine, and stack them. With recycled materials, geometric forms, and natural objects, we create our own sculptures. We record our experiments and observations in a sketchbook.

This workshop invites a shift in perspective – encouraging us to see the seemingly ordinary in new ways. The recycled becomes the starting point for new thoughts; the familiar takes on new meaning.

Mono Magic – Monotype Workshop

A workshop for pupils and young people

Duration: 90 minutes
Fee: € 2 / student

The studio of Kunsthalle Wien offers space for experimentation and creative exploration. This workshop focuses on monotype – a fascinating artistic printing technique developed in the 17th century that continues to inspire today. Unlike other printing methods, monotype produces only a single image – each result is one of a kind.

Using ink, rollers, cotton swabs, or brushes, participants design their own printing plates. Whether abstract patterns, lines and shapes, or figurative motifs or entire scenes – there are no limits to creative expression.

What can be conveyed in a single print? How does a drawing change through transfer and mirroring? This workshop invites you to play with materials, explore new techniques, and experiment freely with colors and forms.

By the end, participants will have created several personal prints – snapshots of a creative process, each as unique as the moment of its creation.
