As part of the exhibition Lebt und arbeitet in Wien: Contemporary Art from Vienna, Kunsthalle Wien is cooperating with Independent Space Index 2026: From 29 to 31 May, a panel discussion will take place daily at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz, followed by a guided tour. With more than 50 freely accessible exhibitions and events all over town, the yearly festival, hosted by the Viennese project spaces, celebrates the distinctive vibrancy, complexity and diversity of Vienna’s independent art scene.

Indexing as Method: Toward, In Relation, Beyond

What does it mean to index independent art spaces – not merely as a cataloguing exercise, but as a critical method? Across three days, this discursive programme uses the index as both a practical and conceptual tool: a way of locating, situating and moving through ideas that resist neat categorisation. Each day takes a different positional stance. Toward asks how independent spaces cultivate criticality from within conditions of precarity, embracing unpredictability as methodology rather than obstacle. In Relation examines how architecture is never a neutral backdrop but an active participant in the production of meaning, and how independent spaces navigate – and think with – the environments they inhabit. Beyond explores the limits of institutional language, asking what alternative textual and discursive strategies emerge when spaces are free to determine how, when and whether text appears at all. Together, the three days propose that indexing is not a passive act of listing but an active, positional practice – one that independent spaces are uniquely placed to perform.

Independent Space Index

Independent Space Index is an initiative of Viennese independent spaces, aimed at increasing the visibility of independent artistic production, strengthening solidarity among like-minded cultural initiatives and highlighting their contribution. The network and its festival have been the largest joint endeavour of independent art spaces in Vienna since its founding and first festival edition in 2018.
