In the context of the exhibition Guan Xiao: Teenager we invite school pupils to a mathematical art talk. The exhibition by Beijing-based artist Guan Xiao presents a new series of sculptures focusing on the themes of transition, food and shelter. Guan Xiao's art plays with unusual combinations of objects, images and media, as well as anachronistic pairings of the ancient and the futuristic, the organic and the inorganic. Together with mathematicians and university professors Michael Drmota and Dirk Praetorius, art educator Michael Simku and the students, we will establish interdisciplinary connections and discuss how much mathematics is contained in the exhibits on display.

For school classes in grades 10 and 11.
Admission and guided tour are free of charge.

Michael Drmota

Univ.-Prof. Michael Drmota, born in 1964 in Vienna, studied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at TU Wien (1982–1987). After completing his doctorate (1986) and his habilitation (1990), he served as Associate Professor and has been Full Professor of Discrete Mathematics at TU Wien since 2006. During his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation (2013–2019), he co-initiated TUForMath. He is a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and served as President of the Austrian Mathematical Society from 2010 to 2013. Scientifically, Michael Drmota works in number theory and combinatorics, and he has published more than 200 scientific articles and several books.

Dirk Praetorius

Univ.-Prof. Dirk Praetorius, born in 1974 in Neunkirchen an der Saar (Germany), studied Mathematics and Latin Philology at the University of Kiel (1993–2000). After completing his doctorate in Applied Mathematics (2003) and his habilitation (2005), he served as Associate Professor at TU Wien (2005–2017). In 2017, he was promoted to Full Professor of Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations. In 2018, he co-initiated TUForMath  and has since been responsible for all organizational matters. Scientifically, Dirk Praetorius works on computer-based methods for solving differential equations. On these topics, he has published more than 140 scientific articles to date.
