The exhibition, as part of Wiener Festwochen, presented a critical survey of the possibilities of painting in the early 1990s with 300 paintings by 43 artists. Given a long-standing tendency to break with the conventions of the frame, Der zerbrochene Spiegel [The Broken Mirror] explored where painting critically reflects this rule-breaking while still allowing the painting to remain a viable medium. Particular attention was paid to the work of Ed Ruscha on the entire outer wall of the Kunsthalle and its counterpart on the outer wall of Halle B of the MuseumsQuartier. The traditional medium of painting was thus once again brought to the centre of general interest.
