Gottfried Bechtold
Works 1962–1996

The solo exhibition by the Austrian conceptual and media artist Gottfried Bechtold (born 1947 in Bregenz, lives and works in Hörbranz, Vorarlberg), featuring around 150 drawings, models, sculptures and objects, opened the Austrian Artists’ programme series at the Museumsquartier. Bechtold, who originally trained as a sculptor, has been working since the 1960s in an experimental, analytical and interventionist manner within and with the tension between the interrelationships of nature and civilisation, human and technology-based communication, reality and virtuality. For the artist, the element of perceptible reality in the artwork does not merely serve as a mediator between the viewer and the conceptual idea. For him, the material itself is, in its own right, a potential carrier of information.

The exhibition was organised in collaboration with the Bregenzer Kunstverein and was subsequently on display at the Künstlerhaus Palais Thurn und Taxis in Bregenz.
