Heinz Gappmayr (b. 1925 – d. 2010, Innsbruck) was one of the pioneers and most significant figures in conceptual art in the German-speaking world. Drawing on the semantic and semiotic dimensions of written symbols and their visual context, the artist – a master of visual language – built up a life’s work. As early as the 1960s, his works had gained international recognition. The exhibition showcased key phases of Gappmayr’s artistic output between 1961 and 1997, thereby continuing the series of exhibitions featuring leading Austrian artists whose work is characterised by interdisciplinarity and multimedia approaches.

The exhibition was subsequently shown at the Mücsarnok Art Gallery in Budapest.
