In his work, Vienna-based photographer Leo Kandl disregards the rules of fashion photography. He does not devote his attention to rapidly changing fashion collections, but focuses on classic, worn men's jackets. He is interested in garments that tell stories. Surface texture, volume, cut and pattern fill the picture plane and draw the viewer's gaze. The seemingly casual folds pile up into huge ravines, the overview is lost and the gaze gets caught in the fabric. There is nothing dusty about the worn garments, but rather something timeless that opens up space for storytelling. For Leo Kandl, clothing carries ‘a dual orientation, that of the outward-looking public and that of the private.’
