Gary Hill

17.11.1993–9.1.1994

Location

Kunsthalle Wien
Karlsplatz

Curator: Christine van Assche

Video artist Gary Hill (born 1951 in Santa Monica, California) explores various forms and aspects of human language, whether spoken, written or expressed through body language and gestures. In his works, he visualises processes of thought, perception and communication. Hill transforms these into something physically tangible, a combination of visual and spatial experiences of time. In the works and reflections of this artist, originally trained as a sculptor, the human body is both the starting point and the goal, the sender and the receiver. The body, which is our only tangible possession in the world becomes inviolable in its representation.

With over 20 video installations and 30 video tapes, the exhibition brought together a representative selection of Gary Hill's most important works from 1981 to 1993.

After the IVAM in Valencia and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Vienna was the fourth stop for the exhibition, conceived and launched at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
