Seven Austrian artists of the middle and younger generations were invited to each select a foreign artist with whom to explore artistic confrontations. The aim of the exhibition was to place Austrian positions in a context that draws its vocabulary from an international flow of information. To achieve this, Dutch curator Saskia Bos, who had no personal or institutional ties to the art scene in Vienna, was deliberately commissioned for the project. The ‘elective affinities’ perceived by the artists were diverse: from simply naming and inviting a respected artist, to presenting the other, to precise collaboration between two artists. The resulting positions included painting, video and installation, as well as a dedicated radio station.
In addition, a video programme initiated by Franz West was shown at various locations in the Kunsthalle.
