As the last major exhibition in the yellow ‘art container’ on Karlsplatz before the Kunsthalle Wien opened its new home in the Museumsquartier in May 2001, Living and Working in Vienna featured over 25 contemporary artists who either lived in Vienna or addressed the context of Vienna in their work. An international team of curators (Paulo Herkenhoff, Maaretta Jaukkuri and Rosa Martínez) has undertaken to explore the situation of ‘Art in Vienna’, conducting a field study of the present-day intellectual and cultural climate of this city and the elements that make it. This view from outside is directed to art trends, positions and concepts, looking for the cutting edge and novelty, for the controversial and the suggestive. The artists participating were invited to produce new works for the exhibition. Vienna keeps reappearing in them again as a local or mental reference point. Living and Working in Vienna thus became a platform for a mobile art scene between taking stock and taking action.
