CREMASTER 1 is a spectacular cinematic sculpture about mass and ornament, a metaphor for reproduction and gender indifference, the story of a system in limbo. In his Cremaster series, Matthew Barney bridges the gap between dance, film and visual art. Born in 1967, the American artist rose to prominence within a few years, participating in documenta IX and the Whitney Biennial. In 1996, he received the Hugo Boss Prize from the Guggenheim Museum. In addition to the film, the preparatory work for CREMASTER 1 was included in the exhibition in order to demonstrate the complexity of the work's content.

Further presentation: Museum of Contemporary Art, Basel.
