Matthew Barney
Cremaster 2
25.1.–13.2.2000
Cremaster 2 is the fourth part of a series of spectacular cinematic ‘operas’ named by Matthew Barney after the muscles that move the testicles when the external temperature changes. ‘In the Cremaster films, they symbolise the system's desire to control this rising and falling’ (M. Barney).
Cremaster 2 refers to the story of Gary Gilmore, who was executed in the USA in 1977 for robbery and murder. In Barney's typically symbolically charged visual language, the film takes us from a glacier in the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the salt flats of Bonneville, from Utah in 1976 to Chicago in 1893.
Further screenings: 30 January, 6 February, 13 February, each at 4 pm.
