The ‘all-round’ artist Oskar Schlemmer (1888, Stuttgart – 1943, Baden-Baden) became famous above all for his exemplary work at the Bauhaus as a painter, sculptor, illustrator, mural designer, teacher and theorist.

The exhibition traced the development of Oskar Schlemmer's ideas on the renewal of dance up to their first climax, the Triadic Ballet, his ongoing and intensive exploration of the possibilities of modern theatre and dance during his time at the Bauhaus, the difficulties of keeping modern ideas alive, and finally his personal resistance to politics and attitudes that were hostile to these ideas and their continuation. His works for the stage and theatre from 1904 to 1941 were shown for the first time.

A co-production of the Kunsthalle Wien with the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and the Sprengel Museum Hannover.
