Birke Gorm
you, you, you, you, you, you, you,…
Each figure from Birke Gorm’s series you, you, you, you, you, you, you,… (2026, ongoing series) is made from used tea towels, rags or napkins, drawing on a vernacular tradition of creating figurative bodies from discarded materials. For Kunsthalle Wien, the artist has produced five new works. The textiles are dyed in a brownish red hue using ‘dirty pot’, a brew of rusty iron, water and vinegar that is repeatedly boiled to produce a dense, earthy tone – recurring throughout Gorm’s sculptures and installations.
Set against contemporary modes of rapid production, these small figures emphasise traditional manual practices of binding, dyeing and assembling – techniques that are historically often associated with female labour. Resembling rag dolls, the figures evoke cultural and spiritual associations, where humble materials are imbued with a symbolic charge.
Sales proceeds support Kunsthalle Wien’s programme.
