Miriam Stoney with Stefan Grimus: All That Was Missing

Miriam Stoney presents her new work All That Was Missing (2025), a live reading of texts from Missing (2025), her ongoing, durational work produced over the course of the exhibition. Conceived as a way of inserting herself into Vienna during a period of physical absence – while also allowing the city to occupy her thoughts from afar – the work operates as a substitute for presence through acts of imagination.
The reading becomes a way of re-entering that process, of returning to a work that initially unfolded through distance. What began as a daily practice of writing four lines evolved into a form with its own internal logic, almost mechanical in its execution. Rather than revealing a surplus of imaginative potential, the writing exposed its limits, as Stoney navigated the boundaries of what could be thought or done within existing conditions.
A steady rhythm emerged where novelty might has been expected – suggesting that repetition can carry its own kind of force. The texts reflect on possibility, desire and closure, while also pointing to the foreclosure of imagination shaped by material constraints: limited space, constant work and the pressures of production. This sense of repetition and constraint is mirrored in Stefan Grimus’ looping composition, which accompanies the performance and underscores the cyclical, durational nature of both the writing and reading.
The reading is free with a valid exhibition ticket.
