Circle Talks is an open discussion and exchange format within the framework of the kültüř gemma!-fellowship by Viviane Lê Tanzmeister at Kunsthalle Wien. Based on street dance and hip-hop cultures, in which gathering in a circle (cypher) is a central social and artistic practice, Circle Talks invites participants to experience gathering as a form of care, exchange and collective perception.

This Circle Talk explores positionality through the lens of the body: how we enter, move through and take up space. Through mapping our social identities, reflecting on structural positions and power relations and engaging in embodied exercises, we will look at how our experiences shape the way we see and relate to others. Together, we will experiment with tools for self-reflection. From identifying privileges and biases to questioning our immediate perceptions – note that this can be activating. We aim to open a braver space, not a safer space – since we cannot ensure safety for everybody, but centre respect, softness and accountability.

The session invites participants to connect these reflections to dance practices, asking: what does it mean to take up space consciously within a shared culture? After the Circle Talk we will transition into a jam, holding space to stay with these questions in movement and practice. Feel free to come for only the talk or the jam.
